Van Marwijk and KNVB close to deal
National team coach Bert van Marwijk and the Dutch national football union KNVB are reportedly close to signing an agreement on extending the successful coach’s contract.
Mr Van Marwijk’s business agent Rob Jansen said on Monday that negotiations were “in a very advanced stage” and things were “looking good”.
The 59-year-old coach from Deventer has been in charge of the national team since mid 2008. His contract expires after next year’s European Championships. At stake is an extension of his current contract until after the 2016 European Championships.
Bert van Marwijk and the Dutch national team came second at last year’s World Championships. Under the leadership of the former coach of – among others – Feyenoord and Borussia Dortmund, the national team only ever lost three matches compared to 31 victories.
Under the terms of the new contract, Van Marwijk will reportedly not be allowed to leave before the end of his contract should a more interesting opportunity present itself. Mr Jansen on Monday refused to confirm the report. “We are still discussing terms, I am not going to reveal them all.”
