AMSTERDAM – State secretary for the environment Pieter van Geel will almost certainly be named the faction leader for the CDA in parliament.
It emerged on Monday that he is the only candidate for the position. Monday evening was the last opportunity for faction members to declare their candidacy.
Van Geel will talk to the faction on Wednesday about his candidacy and the faction will then make a decision. The position has opened up since Maxime Verhagen, who has led the faction for the past four years, will become minister for foreign affairs.
Insiders in the CDA have said over the past few weeks that Verhagen’s successor would have to be Catholic since the prime minister and party leader Jan Peter Balkenende is Protestant. Van Geel, a Brabant native, is indeed Catholic.
After Verhagen and Maria van de Hoeven, who will also serve in the new cabinet, Van Geel was the highest ranking Catholic on the CDA’s list of candidates in the last general elections.
