National coach Bert van Marwijk has appointed his son in law Mark van Bommel as the new captain of the Dutch national football team.

Mark van Bommel succeeds Giovanni van Bronckhorst who ended his career after the World Cup. Van Marwijk says 33-year-old Van Bommel is the ideal captain for the ‘Orange’ team. “He has the right age and is in a good position on the field. He also has experience. He also led the squad at PSV and Bayern München. We very briefly discussed the matter with the technical staff. It took us less than a minute to make up our minds. We unanimously chose Van Bommel.”
