THE HAGUE – A local employee of the Dutch embassy in Amman (Jordan) has submitted a complaint against Socialist SP MP Harry van Bommel. She claims he harassed her during a visit to the Middle East by the standing parliamentary committee for Foreign Affairs on 12 July.

Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen was informed of the incident by the Dutch ambassador in Amman and has passed the complaint on to Christian democrat CDA MP Henk Jan Ormel, the chairman of the standing committee.

Ormel has confirmed a report on the matter in weekly magazine Elsevier on Wednesday. He will discuss the incident with Van Bommel on Wednesday afternoon. Ormel has also informed speaker of Parliament Gerdi Verbeet.

Ormel does not want to comment on the case at the moment. "I was not there." He did say that parliamentary delegations abroad should "realise that they are members of the delegation and ambassadors of the Netherlands 24-hours a day" during their visits, and should act accordingly.

For the rest neither Verbeet nor Ormel have any power to impose sanctions against MPs who misbehave abroad. "For sanctions you would have to turn to the faction [of the MP in question]," Ormel said.

Van Bommel claims in a reaction that he only told the employee that she looked very good. He says that it is nonetheless justified that he has been addressed on the matter and he has apologised to the woman.

Minister Verhagen says the embassy employee has accepted the apologies, therefore closing the case, in Verhagen's opinion. The CDA minister did not want to comment further.

SP faction leader Jan Marijnissen was not available for comment on Wednesday.
