Van Basten to possibly return to Ajax
Marco van Basten has been asked by the board of Amsterdam Ajax to become its new technical director, according to regional broadcaster RTV Noord-Holland.
In a sports programme report, the TV broadcaster claimed Dutch football icon Johan Cruijff, who is on Ajax’ board, regards Van Basten as the right man to drive the technical direction of the premier league champion.
It’s unknown whether Van Basten has accepted the offer. Sports analyst Ton Ojers said on the programme he had “strong evidence that Marco has been approached for the function of technical director, not CEO, but technical director of Ajax.”
The revelation has been received with surprise, given the history of two former Ajax players. Three years ago, the two clashed over the youth academy, when Van Basten was acting technical director at Ajax.
Van Basten resigned from Ajax Van Basten became manager of Ajax and its technical director after Euro 2008, when he managed the national team. In May 2009, he resigned from Ajax after his team failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Van Basten started the season well, but in the second half of the season striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar left for Real Madrid, and Van Basten started switching around his lineups.
While Ajax won last season’s Dutch premier league, management went through a period of huge turmoil. Last March, Ajax's board of directors quit over a disagreement with Cruyff over how the club should be run.
