Party claims energy companies are essentially being granted an "interest-free loan of billions."

THE HAGUE – Energy companies should pay customers interest on monthly prepayments that turn out to be in excess of what is owed on power consumption, says the Liberal VVD.

MP Halbe Zijlstra of the opposition party announced that a proposal to this effect will be submitted to Economic Affairs Minister Maria van der Hoeven this week.

Zijlstra is annoyed at the high monthly prepayments, as a result of which many households pay a great deal excess in advance for gas and power. They are not refunded this amount until their end-of-year statement.

"In fact we are all giving the energy companies an interest free loan of several billion euros a year," the MP said in the Telegraaf on Wednesday.
