AMSTERDAM – An independent audit system must be established to gauge the success of development aid, says Liberal VVD MP Boekestijn.

It is currently the ministry itself which checks up on whether aid to other countries is having the desired effect.

Boekestijn thinks that the ministry should banish all semblance of partiality by contracting out this kind of investigation. He said that there is a good chance that the ministry puts pressure on officials to present a rosier picture of the situation than warranted.

Boekestijn says that the Dutch are losing faith in the idea that development aid really helps. An independent inquiry could help restore support for this kind of aid.
