VVD: no member approval needed for coalition
The conservative VVD party is not planning to present the results of its coalition talks to its members for their approval. Making the announcement on Saturday, a representative of the party’s leadership said however that it would inform its supporters of the results of those talks. How it will do this has still to be settled.
The representative said that according to the party’s statutes, it was not necessary to secure membership approval for a coalition agreement. She also noted that there had been no request for such approval from the roughly 38,000 party members.
On the Friday evening edition of the television programme , prominent VVD politician Pieter Winsemius said he thought it would be good if the party’s members could, at some point, make their feelings known about any proposed coalition agreement.
