VVD angry about soldiers' gay pride ban
Dutch conservative VVD party is furious about a government ban on soldiers in uniform in last weekend's Amsterdam Gay Pride parade.5 August 2008
THE NETHERLANDS - The conservative VVD party is furious about a ban by Deputy Defence Minister Jack de Vries on soldiers in uniform taking part in last weekend's Gay Pride boat parade in Amsterdam. The Christian Democrat deputy minister found it inappropriate for soldiers in uniform to take part in the Gay Pride extravaganza.
The opposition party cannot understand why the government issued the ban.
They point out that in 2007, Deputy Defence Minister Cees van der Knaap and several soldiers took part in Pink Monday celebrations in Tilburg and the Rotterdam Summer Carnival. VVD MP Anouchka van Miltenburg accuses Minister De Vries of undermining the importance of gay emancipation.
