AMSTERDAM — Initially accused of possessing and transporting explosives, the main suspect in a Utrecht terrorism investigation was released Monday due to a lack of evidence, the public prosecutor said.

But Hassan O., 37, still faces prosecution on charges he was supplied with information leaked from the Dutch intelligence service AIVD. The AIVD has since taken measures to prevent renewed leaks.

The prosecutor claims that O. initially admitted to being involved in terrorist activities. But he later told police he invented the statement. The prosecution has accused him of boasting.

The man was arrested on 26 September with three other suspects for alleged involvement in terrorist activities. The three other suspects, all members of the one family, were released two days later.
