The Catharijneconvent museum in Utrecht has acquired Abraham Bloemaert’s painting The Four Fathers of the Latin Church at an auction in London.

The monumental altarpiece shows St Augustine, St Jerome, St Ambrose and St Gregory the Great discussing the doctrine of the Eucharist. The work will be on display as part of the museum’s permanent collection from 5 September.

The Four Fathers of the Latin Church is one of Bloemaert’s most important and most overtly Catholic works. It is not known who commissioned the altar piece, which was painted in Utrecht.

Abraham Bloemaert 1566 - 1651 was born in the southern town of Gorinchem, but spent most of his life in Utrecht. He mostly painted history subjects and some landscapes.
