THE HAGUE – We must take advantage of the "unique opportunity" presented by the fact that a majority in Parliament agrees that higher taxes should be introduced to tackle excessive salaries in the business sector.

Finance Minister Wouter Bos said this late on Wednesday night during an emergency debate on tackling top salaries. Bos says the cabinet will present a number of measures as soon as possible to put higher taxes on generous severance pay packages and bonuses.

In exchange Bos is prepared to drop the cabinet proposal to limit the deduction of pension premiums for incomes above EUR 185,000. "If we can better respond to social unrest about exorbitant bonuses with more focused measures, then that is a victory," Bos said.

The Labour PvdA minister continues to deny the claim from the opposition that a deal has been made within the coalition of CDA, PvdA and ChristenUnie and that the tackling of top salaries has been supported in exchange for a delay on the discussion on relaxing redundancy law.
