THE HAGUE – Benefits administration agency UWV has advised Minister for Social Affairs Piet Hein Donner that the unemployment premium be reduced by almost 50 percent. Workers currently pay an 8.25 percent unemployment premium – this can be lowered to 4.34 percent in 2008.

The UWV bases its recommendation on an expected decrease in unemployment. Last year 250,000 people were receiving benefits, next year this number is estimated to be 176,000.

Both employers and trade unions have long been calling for the unemployment premium to be lowered. This will reduce payroll costs and workers will see an increase in their net salary.
