Unemployment forecast for building sector rises

The Economic Institute for the Building Sector, EIB, says it expects 5,000 more job losses in the coming year.

Only a few months ago, the EIB was forecasting job losses of 25,000 but its latest estimate paints a gloomier picture, with the disappearance of around 30,000 jobs.

The institute expects a 10 percent decline in production, particularly in the housing sector, and says the ordinary building worker will be hardest hit by the slump. Larger-scale government-funded engineering projects such as road building will be less severely affected.
