AMSTERDAM – The government does not think it would be a good idea for the US to withdraw its troops from Iraq quickly. A departure of the US troops within a year would seriously compromise safety in the country as long as no alternative has been established to keep order.

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said this on Tuesday during question time in Parliament. Green-left Groenlinks faction leader Femke Halsema had asked what the Netherlands' position on this matter was, considering it is a loyal ally of US President George Bush.

Halsema's questions came after French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin recently called on the US to withdraw from Iraq within a year.
