The United States has dropped its bid to organise the World Cup in 2018. The United States told FIFA that is wanted to focus on organising the football gala in 2022. This means there is one less competitor for the event against the Belgian-Dutch bid and the 2018 World Cup will almost certainly take place in Europe.

Russia, Spain and Portugal are also in the race to host the world's most important football event in 2018. The Netherlands and Belgium are also formally candidates for the World Cup in 2022, besides America, Qatar, Japan, South Korea and Australia have also entered bids.

The 24 members of the FIFA committee will decide on 2 December in Zürich which countries will host the World Cup in 2018 and 2022.
