US Supreme Court to investigate Shell
The US Supreme Court intends to investigate whether Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell has been involved in human rights violations in Nigeria.
The decision is a victory for the families of the Nigerians executed by the military government in the 1990s. The victims were protesting against Shell’s activities in the Niger Delta region. Their relatives claim the oil company was involved in gross human rights violations between 1992 and 1995.
A lower court in the United States previously ruled that companies cannot be prosecuted for human rights violations, but the Supreme Court refers to legislation from 1789 which makes prosecution possible.
Shell denies any involvement in human rights violations.
