Dutch police have arrested a witness for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ICTY. Shefqet Kabashi was part of the Kosovo Liberation Army UÇK. He was called to testify in the case against Ramush Haradinaj, a former prime minister of Kosovo who is suspected of war crimes.

In 2007, Mr Kabashi refused to give evidence against Mr Haradinaj who was eventually acquitted for lack of evidence. The ICTY says Mr Kabashi’s testimony is relevant to the appeal in the Haradinaj case which began on Thursday.

During the initial trial, prosecutors faced a major problem when witnesses refused to come to court, saying they were being threatened. The judges handed down their ruling without giving the prosecution time to get crucial witnesses to come to The Hague.
