't ZAND – Police arrested a 20-year-old resident of 't Zandt and his 20-year-old girlfriend from Uithuizen on Tuesday. They are suspected of involvement in a series of fires that have been set in 't Zand over the past months.
The young man was more or less caught red handed, police said during a press conference in Groningen on Wednesday. Police had been watching him as a possible suspect for some time.
The police arrested the man on Tuesday as he exited a shed in which he had tried to set a fire. The police found a burning candle in the shed, wrapped with flammable material, the method that had been used for the other fires set in the area as well.
