AMSTERDAM — The bodies of two people have been found in the Mussel Canal in the northern province of Groningen.
A passer-by discovered the bodies lying behind a dike in the area on Tuesday evening, a police spokesperson said.
The identity of the victims has not been established but it was later reported on Wednesday morning that the bodies are that of a man and a woman. Detectives are treating their deaths as a crime. More information is expected later on Wednesday once the results of preliminary forensic tests become available.
Separately, it was announced on Tuesday that body parts found in a sports bag in the Persoons Harbour in Rotterdam last month were from a teenage girl.
Forensic tests established the remains come from a young female, aged between 12 and 16. She was at least 1.68 metres high. The victim's identity has yet to be established.
