An outbreak of the multiple resistant Klebsiella bacteria has claimed two more lives at the Maasstad hospital in Rotterdam. The latest figures show a total of 78 people have been infected, 27 of whom have since died.

The hospital has diagnosed no new infections and says the situation is now under control. In the past few months the Rotterdam hospital was the focus of media attention as a result of the Klebsiella outbreak.

Exactly how many patients died as a result of the bacterial infection is still under investigation as the victims were already suffering from other illnesses when they were infected.

The Dutch health authorities have put the Maasstad hospital under close supervision because it was slow to respond to the Klebsiella outbreak.
