THE HAGUE – The Ministry of Defence will transfer a marine battalion to northern Afghanistan beginning on Friday.
The battalion, augmented with naval personnel and army, air force and military police units, will be loaned to NATO to support the orderly progress of elections in the northern provinces, Defence said on Wednesday.
Provincial and parliamentary voting will take place on 18 September.
The Dutch detachment consists of 750 troops, most of whom will be stationed at Mazar e Sharif airport.
Another platoon of more than 30 marines will be stationed at the Dutch base at Pol-e Khomri in Baghlan province.
The posting will last through October.
The main force of about 600 troops will depart from the air base at Eindhoven over the next two weeks in groups of 100.
