AMSTERDAM — Dutch rail operator NS has reacted furiously after one of its train drivers was temporarily blinded by a fireball caused by a "boobytrap" left on the railway line.

NS director Aad Veenman described the incident as a crime that had to be severely published. "It has to be made clear this sort of criminality will not be tolerated," he said.

Sometime early on Friday morning someone threw an industrial cord which was connected to a bench vice over  the overhead power lines near Dukenburg station in Nijmegen.

A sort circuit occurred when a train passed by and a fireball bore its way into the driver's cabin. He was momentarily blinded, injured his elbow and there were scorch marks on his clothes.

The KLPD national police service is investigating the latest act of serious vandalism that could have led to a serious accident and injury.

In January A metal poll was left handing from the power lines in Malden near Nijmegen.  Frans Zuiderhoek of the KLPD said detectives had not ruled out a link between that case and Friday's incident.
