Tourists spend less in Netherlands
Tourists in the Netherlands are spending 17 percent less in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period a year ago.The Netherlands – Foreign visitors to the Netherlands are spending less in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same period a year ago, reveals figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) Monday.
The quarterly figures reveal visitors to the Netherlands spent a mere EUR 1 billion during their stays, down a whole 17 percent. In contrast, Dutch people spent four percent more abroad or EUR 1.7 billion than they did in the same period in 2008,
News agency ANP reports that foreign expenditure inside the Netherlands has been dropping since the second quarter of 2008, showing an average decline of 12 percent.
Meanwhile, the average for Dutch spending while abroad increased in the same period by seven percent.
Spanish visitors whose spending have declined the most from April 2008 to March 2009 are down 28 percent, followed by the British (down 19 percent), Swiss (down 15 percent) and German tourists (a 14-percent decline).
