Tougher measures wanted against bus vandals
Bus companies want police and council to step up efforts in preventing violence against buses and its drivers.29 October 2008
THE NETHERLANDS - Former Dutch police commissioner Eric Nordholt says violence against bus drivers and vandalism of buses demands a tough, unified response.
He was speaking after investigating incidents in Gouda, Arnhem and Ede on behalf of the Veolia, Connexxion and Arriva transport companies.
In Gouda and Ede, drivers were threatened, while in Arnhem buses were stoned.
Nordholt said that councils and police forces are not working together to tackle the problem. He wants to see a national coordinator appointed and the bus companies reporting each incident when it occurs.
The three companies want much higher fines for people who threaten drivers and vandalise buses.
