New research shows the basic salaries of directors of public companies registered in the Netherlands are higher than those of their counterparts in the United States. Mark Foekema of Nyenrode Business University looked into the figures behind 88 companies included in the S&P 500 index in the US and 78 companies included in the Euronext 100 or EuroStoxx 50 indexes in the Netherlands.

The average basic wage for CEOs at the Dutch firms was 958,000 euros a year, while that of their American counterparts was considerably lower, at 716,000 euros. No major differences were found as far as cash bonuses went. Bonuses, given in shares and options, and pension payments were not included in the research.
