Top Dutch parties call for child maintenance reform

The financial burden on parents after a divorce must be divided more simply and fairly. That's according to a white paper submitted to Deputy Justice Minister Fred Teeven by the senior coalition partner VVD and the opposition Labour Party. Both parties argue that divorce should not only result in the father paying child maintenance, both parents should pay at least 600 euros a year regardless of their income.

They also want a record kept of how often a child stays with each parent and who pays the regular expenses. Under the existing system calculating maintenance is very complicated, as Labour MP Jeroen Recourt points out.
