Top Christian Dem appeals to party: "come to your senses"
Prominent Christian Democrat Doekle Terpstra has called upon his party to "really think seriously" in the coming weeks about the desirability of a coalition with the conservative VVD and parliamentary support from Geert Wilders' anti-Islamic Freedom Party.
Speaking on the radio programme This is the Day, he said the extra party conference would be the best time for the members to "come to their senses" and reject this coalition.
The Christian Democrats announced earlier they would be organising a special conference to allow the party to decide whether to take part in any coalition government which might arise.
Mr Terpstra said he thinks the conference will be held if and when the three parties produce a coalition agreement. He added that he will resign his membership if the coalition goes ahead.
The VVD, the Christian Democrats and the Freedom Party officially start their coalition talks today, together with chief negotiator Ivo Opstelten. Last week they held informal preliminary discussions.
