A Dutch cargo ship and an Italian fishing boat collided in the Mediterranean on Thursday, slightly injuring three crew members who were on the trawler, ANSA news agency reported.

The collision occurred just south of the Italian island of Lampedusa and the two vessels are being taken to the port of Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, where prosecutors have already launched an investigation.

The Dutch ship was sailing from Turkey and headed for Britain.

The three men -- two Italians and one Tunisian -- have been taken to hospital. Their trawler was badly damaged but did not sink, the report said.
