AMSTERDAM – Two capybaras were born at the Artis Zoo on Boxing Day. A day later mother Bernadette gave birth to a third kit, the Amsterdam zoo announced on Thursday.
The capybara is the largest rodent in the world and can weigh as much as 50 kg. The animal lives near rivers and swamps and is a good swimmer. The mother carried the babies for about four months, shorter than usual. A litter of capybara kits is usually four to five young.
The zoo says the mother is doing fine and that proud father Wimmie has met the kits as well. The babies have not yet been named as their sex has not been determined.
The new arrivals have only been allowed outside briefly because of the cold, the zoo has said.
