Third of Dutch want guilder back
Almost one in three Dutch people would like to see a return to the guilder, according to a survey by pollster Maurice de Hond’s peil.nl.
The poll comes in response to an announcement by Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party that it would be commissioning an investigation into the feasibility of the Netherlands abandoning the euro and returning to its pre-2002 currency. Among the rightwing populist party’s voters, 72 percent are in favour of a return to the guilder, the poll found.
The Freedom Party says it is currently searching for a suitable bureau to carry out the investigation. If its research suggests that a return to the guilder would benefit the country, the Freedom Party proposes that the issue should be put to a referendum. Forty-three percent of those surveyed in the peil.nl poll agreed with this proposal.
