The electric bicycle, the bike with auxiliary motor, has made a real breakthrough in Holland. It's no longer seen as a 'senior citizen' thing and sales have exploded over the last couple of years.

As it doesn't make any noise or cause emissions many people think the electric bike is very ecofriendly. Compared to the car that's of course true. But what about the battery it uses? That's chemical waste. And the bike needs to be charged. One thing is clear: consumers don't buy such a bicycle for the sake of sustainability.
