BRUSSELS – Within Europe the Netherlands has the most advanced techniques to intercept forged passports. Experts of the Marechaussee have even been asked to train EU officials. The Netherlands will also offer training sessions for the accompanying of refugees about to be deported.

The commander of the Marechaussee, lieutenant-general Minze Beuving said this in Brussels on Wednesday. Beuving also chairs the board of the European border agency Frontex whose task it is to assist EU member states in controlling the external borders and coordinate the actions of the different countries.

Currently a number of Dutch officials, equipped with a device that recognises forged passports, are on behalf of Frontex, active on the Canary Islands, on ferries between Morocco and Spain and at the Serbian border with the EU. Between 15 and 20 Marechaussee officers are being trained to come into action within five days if Frontex so requires.

The government is considering making available vessels, aircraft or helicopters in case Frontex needs them urgently.
