The Netherlands abstains on EU 2009 budget

The Netherlands has withheld approval for European Union expenditure in 2009. All other EU countries except the United Kingdom and Sweden voted to approve the 2009 budget.

After holding talks with European colleagues, Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager, described the Dutch move as “a political signal”. The European Court of Auditors has also complained of not being able to monitor the EU’s expenditure in 2009 properly.

The Netherlands voted against accepting the 2008 budget, but abstained on that for 2009. Explaining the change, Mr De Jager said that EU financial accounts had not been adequate for years, but that there had been a slight improvement in 2009.
