The Hague: step up sanctions against Syria

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has called for European Union sanctions against Syria to be stepped up in the wake of Sunday’s violent crackdown on anti-government demonstrators in the city of Hama.

Mr Rosenthal described the crackdown as shocking. He also called for the UN Security Council to make haste and adopt a resolution that condemns the Syrian violence.

President Assad’s use of brutality against peaceful protesters, the foreign minister said, is unjustifiable and unacceptable. “Assad is losing his legitimacy by the day”, the minister added.

Security forces are said to have killed dozens in the city of Hama on Sunday. Ativists put the death toll at over 130.
