AMSTERDAM - The Netherlands is opposed to any treaty between the European Union and Serbia unless Belgrade transfers war crimes suspects to the special tribunal for former Yugoslavia, Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said Monday.

Verhagen (Christian Democrats CDA) made his statement prior to a European Union meeting in Brussels with his foreign affairs colleagues where the issue of Serbia is on the agenda, Dutch media reports said.

Verhagen added he supported a "European future" for Serbia. "But the Serbs should adopt certain European norms and values. They should transfer the suspects of war crimes to the UN tribunal."

Only Belgium supports the Netherlands. The other EU members reportedly favour signing a treaty with Serbia.
