The Hague absent from UN racism summit

The Netherlands will not attend this year’s United Nations anti-racism meeting in New York, the foreign ministry informs.

The Hague previously announced it would only join the gathering, due to be held on 22 September, provided no unrelated subjects would be broached.

On Monday, Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal said he expected some countries would voice anti-Semitic opinions and criticise Israel, which, The Hague argues, are not relevant for the meeting.

Two prior anti-racism meetings did see Israel accused of racism. In response, the Netherlands boycotted the last meeting, held in 2009. That year, Iranian President Ahmed Ahmedinejad used his speech to attack Israel. cl
