AMSTERDAM — Despite his acquittal in March 2002, Dutchman Machiel Kuijt has been sentenced in Thailand by an appeals court to life in prison on drugs charges.

Kuijt was taken to the court last Friday, but his lawyer and the Dutch embassy only received news of the ruling on Monday.

The Dutchman has been in custody for the past five years, having been ordered to remain in detention after the 2002 acquittal to await the appeal from the Thai public prosecutor, an NOS news report said.
