DELFZIJL - A fire has destroyed a car garage and showroom in the village of Farmsum, near the town of Delfzijl in the north-eastern province of Groningen. The fire was discovered at 4.30 on Saturday morning when smoke was seen coming from inside the building. However, fire-fighters were unable to go inside because of the presence of gas canisters.

The blaze destroyed the company's offices, records, storeroom and canteen. The showroom and the work area suffered smoke and water damage.

The fire is the tenth in a short period in the province. On Friday, fire destroyed an ancient oil mill and its living quarters in the village of Tjamsweer, also near Delfzijl.

Police say they have found no connection linking the blazes.
