THE HAGUE  – An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people in the Netherlands could possibly be influenced by ideas of Salafism, a radical and ultra orthodox ideology in Islam. There are approximately 2,500 ‘potential activists’.

Home Affairs Minister Guusje Terhorst said this during consultations with members of parliament on Wednesday. This was the first time that the minister gave an indication in public about the size of the following of Salafism in the Netherlands.

Despite the insistence of some MPs the minister refused to indicate how many Salafist preachers there are in this country. That is operational information which she may not disclose in public.
