SOESTERBERG – Traffic checks will result in a record of 10 million speeding tickets by the end this year. The Bureau for Traffic Enforcement of the Public Prosecution Department (BOVM) said it expects this on the basis of figures for 2007 so far.
Announced traffic checks along segments of motorway in particular led to more fines. Last year 1.9 million tickets were given during these planned checks, this year the number rose to 2.4 million.
"The number of serious speeding offences is declining," said a spokesperson for BOVM. "As a result minor speeding violations account for a higher percentage of total offences." The minor offences in fact account for more than 70 percent of the total.
Most of the tickets are issued as a result of violations picked up by speeding cameras and route checks.
