AMSTERDAM — Three teenage boys have been arrested in connection with the gruesome rape of a teenage girl in an Amsterdam apartment in which a group of male youths were also forced to engage in sex acts with the female victim as the crime was captured on video.
The rape occurred on the night of 16 October after an acquaintance of one of the seven youths in the Amsterdam apartment rang the doorbell and asked to use the toilet. Later, when the door was opened to let someone else out, two armed culprits stormed inside.
The last two culprits began immediately to threaten and rob the youths, who were alone in the apartment without the presence of an adult. But the robbery quickly developed into the rape of the teenage girl, who is aged 15 or 16, newspaper De Telegraaf reported on Monday.
Police claim the suspects were armed and forced the male youths to watch and perform sexual acts with the girl in the Amsterdam East residence. One of the youths later escaped with the camera and immediately alerted police.
The culprits abandoned the apartment after the youth escaped and despite the fact that two of them were partially masked, the video recording helped police arrest the three suspects, aged 14, 15 and 16.
Youth and sex crime detectives are still investigating the incident and have labelled the crime as "a very serious offence with a peculiar nature".
"It is a terrible story. The images from the video recording that we have seen are really horrifying," police spokesman Rob van der Veen said.
Police claim that inquires have indicated that the two masked and armed youths were the main suspects, but that the acquaintance also played a dubious role. Police also allegedly seized the stolen goods in their residence.
All three suspects remain in custody and one of them is believed to have given a partial statement to police.
