The Swiss stock exchange is expected to reopen on Friday morning, after an undiagnosed technical problem forced its early closure on Thursday.

Geneva – The Swiss stock exchange was forced to close trading about early on Thursday after a technical problem, operators SIX Group said.

"Towards 2.43 pm (1343 GMT) we had a technical problem in our system, the origin of it is still unknown," a spokesman for SIX, Stephan Meier told AFP.

"We expect to reopen tomorrow morning."

Meier said technicians were trying to find the cause of the breakdown.

The Swiss exchange, which runs the Swiss Market Index (SMI) of blue chip companies, has the greatest proportion of foreign firms on its listing alongside the London Stock Exchange.
