AMSTERDAM — New television channel Talpa attracted one million viewers on its first night of broadcasting on Saturday, making it the market leader in the Netherlands.

The figures were released on Monday by the audience monitoring body Stichting KijkOnderzoek.

Talpa's first programme on Saturday, featuring celebrities Beau van Erven Dorens and Linda de Mol, attracted one million viewers. The programme presented a menu of what the sports-and-celebrities channel has to offer.

Talpa is owned by media tycoon and Big Brother creator John de Mol. The station is built around the rights to air Dutch premiere league matches, Big Brother and other reality shows.

Its first football show was watched by 1.1 million people, giving Talpa a 27 percent share of the Dutch television market.
