AMSTERDAM – Commander of the NATO mission in Uruzgan Hans van Griensven does not rule out that the Taliban may be profiting from Dutch aid to the region.

Dutch money is also being put into areas which are under the influence of the Taliban and which the Dutch troops cannot access without ending up in heavy fighting.

In an interview with Elsevier today Van Griensven admits that it could be possible that village elders are getting money from the Dutch which they pass on to the Taliban.

But he says this is an acceptable risk because of the positive effect of the projects. These projects are being undertaken in an effort to win the population over and loosen the Taliban's grip.
