Suspect may have long history of abuse
Two women have now claimed that the accused swimming instructor abused them more than 20 years ago.
Den Bosch – The swimming instructor suspected of sexually abusing his pupils was already abusing girls in the 1980s, according to the commercial television broadcaster, RTL.
Two women went on RTL's evening news Wednesday night, and related how they had been sexually abused as teenagers by Benno Larue.
The mother of one of the girls reported the incident in 1996, but the limitation period for the crime had expired, and police didn't launch a full investigation.
The limitation period for sexual abuse crimes has since been extended.
A new complaint against Larue was lodged in 2004, but legislation protecting the privacy of the suspect prevented the police from using evidence in the 1996 file. However, the police later received concrete information which led to Larue's arrest in early June 2009.
Tens of thousands of photographs of girls between the ages of 6 and 16 were discovered at Larue's home.
The 59-year-old instructor, who operated a swimming school that specialised in lessons for the mentally disabled and children with a fear of water, will remain in police custody for three months while the investigation continues.
