A police officer in Surinam has been arrested on suspicion of drugs trafficking.

Surinam - A police officer in Surinam has been arrested on suspicion of drugs trafficking. He is thought to have helped five workers of SLM airlines to smuggle nine kilogrammes of cocaine to the Netherlands.

Tight security at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport stopped them from off-loading the haul, which was discovered when the plane returned to Surinam.

The five SLM workers were arrested earlier this week. Surinam's judicial authorities say they belong to a gang which specialises in smuggling drugs on regular flights.

The arrested police officer appears to be a member of the so-called JAP squad, set up to fight drug-running.
