Support for smoking ban

16 April 2007, AMSTERDAM – A survey among the 100 largest businesses in the catering industry in the Netherlands indicates that a majority of these companies supports a quick introduction of a smoking ban. Almost two-thirds (64 percent) would like to see a smoking ban introduced soon. One in five (21 percent) opposes such a ban and 14 percent is neutral or undecided. These 100 companies account for annual turnover of EUR 5 billion, 40 percent of the total turnover in the catering industry.

Almost two-thirds (64 percent) would like to see a smoking ban introduced soon. One in five (21 percent) opposes such a ban and 14 percent is neutral or undecided. These 100 companies account for annual turnover of EUR 5 billion, 40 percent of the total turnover in the catering industry.

Public Health Minister Ab Klink has said he wants to introduce a smoking ban as soon as possible. Immediately after his appointment Klink said that smoking should be banned in cafes and restaurants by 2008. The coalition agreement states that a ban will be introduced during the government term, but does not further specify a date.
