THE HAGUE – More than 107,000 children are abused in the Netherlands each year. That is almost twice the number experts assumed until now. About 30 in every 1,000 children suffer physical, emotional or sexual abuse or neglect.

This emerged from a report from the University of Leiden which RTL4 gained access to on Monday. The report was drawn up at the request of the public health ministry, Minister for Youth and Family Affairs Andre Rouvoet will be presented with the report today.

Physical and emotional neglect are the most common forms of child abuse, the report shows. Physical violence affects some 19,000 children, and about 4,700 are sexually abused each year.

Until now experts had estimated that about 50 to 80 thousand children were abused each year. The researchers now say that the actual figure comes to 107,200. According to the report, children in the Netherlands have more of a chance of suffering abuse than children in the US.

The study was based on data from 1,100 professionals in the social and medical services, and on information from the 17 centres for reporting child abuse.

Children of parents who are unemployed or of a low educational level have a significantly higher chance of suffering abuse, according to the study.
