AMSTERDAM — Fire forced the evacuation of 350 to 400 students from a secondary school in Sliedrecht on Friday, but no injuries were reported.
The fire started at about midday and raged out of control in the hall, gym and canteen of the school, Het Griendencollege, located on the Kamerlingh Onneslaan.
A police spokesman said the level-headed actions of school staff resulted in a quick and safe evacuation of the school.
"But there is panic among parents, who are concerned whether their child is out of the building. But I can confirm that no one else is in the school," he said.
It was not immediately known how many teachers were present when the fire broke out.
Fire fighters gave the all clear at the VMBO vocational secondary school at about 2.15pm.
Various fire brigades were dispatched to combat the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other school buildings.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
